Your Name. Pilgrimage Part 3 | From Hida to Suwa

作品:你的名字 · 城市:岐阜·飞驒古川 长野·诹访(上诹访) · 用时:两日半

After the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, I embarked on Taki's journey from that year.

To find that town from the dream, one must leave the bustling metropolis and delve deep into the mountains of central Japan. This is a journey about 'distance' – physical distance, and the distance between Taki and Mitsuha that transcends time and space.

From Hida-Furukawa Station to the twilight by Lake Suwa, all the way, we go to meet her.

Route Overview

This itinerary covers a large area, so it's recommended to set aside a generous 2 days and 1 night.

Part 1: Searching for Itomori Town (Gifu · Hida-Furukawa)

  • Transportation: Transfer at Nagoya to the 'Wide View Hida' Limited Express train.

  • Key points: Hida-Furukawa Station, Hida City Library, Keta Wakamiya Shrine

Part 2: The Miracle at Twilight (Nagano, Suwa)

  • Transportation: After returning to Tokyo, head to Kamisuwa (or via Matsumoto)

  • Key points: Tateishi Park (Lake Itomori panoramic view), Kataware-doki

1. Departure: Shinkansen and Takayama Main Line

Transportation: Tokaido Shinkansen[Tokyo Station][Nagoya Station]

Everyone remembers the scene where Taki eats a bento on the Shinkansen, right?

In reality, Taki rode an N700A series train. As a railway enthusiast and pilgrim, here's an interesting 'goof' detail:

In the movie scene, the arrangement of train seats seems to have been adjusted for composition. Actually, when traveling from Tokyo to Nagoya, the left side has 3 seats (A/B/C), and the right side has 2 seats (D/E). If you want to recreate Taki's angle of looking out the window, remember to choose a seat on the right side.

Transfer: JR Takayama Main Line[Nagoya Station] → [Hida-Furukawa Station]

After Taki, Okudera-senpai, and Tsukasa-kun got off at Nagoya Station, they then transferred to the JR Takayama Line to Hida-Furukawa. This is47:17 in the movieThe scene

After leaving Nagoya, the train became a diesel multiple unit.

With the rumbling engine sound, the scenery outside the window changed from high-rise buildings to streams and autumn leaves. The unique vibration and slightly slower speed of this non-electrified railway make one truly realize: it must have been incredibly difficult for Mitsuha to want to go to Tokyo even once.

2. Hida-Furukawa Station: 'Hida Beef'

Location: Hida-Furukawa Station (inside ticket gate & overpass)

No need to rush out of the station upon arrival

Remember the mascot that Okudera-senpai particularly liked? In the station waiting room, you can find a standee of this 'Hida Beef'. This scene appears at47:44 in the movie.

The station waiting room also has tourist brochures and flyers for Hida City, as well as a map of locations from the movie 'Your Name.'. With this map in hand, you shouldn't get completely lost!

The overpass moment:

Walk to the overpass (pedestrian bridge) on the north side of the station, which is the classic spot where the train stops at 47 minutes 33 seconds in the movie.

Photography tips:

While not as exaggerated as 'one train every two hours' in the movie, the Hida Main Line indeed has infrequent services. To capture the perfect moment of the train stopping exactly on the right side of the frame, you'll need to check the timetable in advance and have a bit more patience on this windy overpass.

3. Finding and Asking for Directions: Strolling Through Furukawa Town

Location: Exit the station and turn right

After exiting the station and turning right, you'll find the taxi stand where Taki, holding a simple sketch, asked for directions.

Minor Difference: The taxi colors in the movie were artistically enhanced; in reality, most taxis parked here are black.

Strolling through Furukawa Town, you'll discover the unique 'quietness' of rural Japan.

There's hardly anyone on the streets, only an occasional breeze. Although the ramen shop where Taki had a tough time in the movie doesn't exist in reality, you can find authentic 'Takayama Ramen' (dark soy sauce broth, thin curly noodles) at any shop in this area, and the taste is incredibly comforting!

4. Hida City Library: Taki's Search Spot

Location: 2-22 Honmachi, Furukawa Town, Hida City

Corresponding scene: Corresponds to51 minutes and 43 seconds into the movie's Furukawa Library, where Taki searched for the list of victims from Itomori Town

This is the most academic stop on the entire tour. In reality, the library's exterior is very modern and beautiful.

⚠ Note! Unauthorized photography is strictly forbidden in the library.

  • The library is a place for citizens to read. If you want to take photos, you must first apply for a 'photography permit' at the front desk, and it's best not to photograph other readers' faces.

  • The library usually closes at 20:00.

Walk near the 16th bookshelf row; that window seat is where Taki sat. Although it's hard to perfectly replicate the angle, sitting here and looking at the light and shadows outside the window, you can almost feel Taki's mood, falling from hope into despair, as he was researching then.

5. Keta Wakamiya Shrine: Stairs Leading to the Sacred Realm

Location: Keta Wakamiya Shrine

Corresponding scene:After passing through the torii gate, this is Movie 47:55, the long staircase when Taki asks about 'Miyamizu Shrine'.

It is recommended to walk this section of the road; although it's over 2 kilometers, the scenery along the way is excellent.

When you stand in front of the torii gate of Keta Wakamiya Shrine and look back, the long staircase and the distant town are fully visible.

It's so quiet here, as if forgotten by time. Although there isn't the dramatic special effect of 'sudden clearing' as in the movie, the solemn atmosphere of a shrine deep in the mountains makes one instinctively want to put their hands together in prayer.

Transition: Head to Lake Suwa (Tateishi Park)

Route Choice

There isn't a smooth direct route from Hida to Suwa. To ensure the itinerary, I chose a seemingly circuitous but actually reliable plan: return to Tokyo/Nagoya, then head to Kamisuwa.

(Of course, experienced travelers can also choose to take a bus from Takayama to Matsumoto, then transfer to Kamisuwa, which is closer)

Transportation: Shinjuku StationTake Chuo Line Limited Express (Azusa)[Kamisuwa Station]

The view from this train offers a surprise—if the weather is good, you can see a clear view of Mount Fuji!

6. Twilight Hour: Tateishi Park

Location: Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture (walk uphill from Kamisuwa Station)

Here comes the main event. This is the most iconic real-world inspiration for 'Lake Itomori'.

Exiting Kamisuwa Station, the walk is not easy; it requires climbing a steep slope for about 20-30 minutes. Along the way, you can see Itomori Substation.

Walk up the small path from the substation, and when you've breathlessly climbed to the observation deck of Tateishi Park, the view before you will make you feel that it was all worth it.

The entire Lake Suwa unfolds before your eyes, with the setting sun painting the lake surface golden. Pilgrims from all over the world gather here, speaking different languages, setting up their cameras, all waiting for the same moment—Kataware-doki (Twilight/Dusk).

⚠ Absolutely Important Safety Tips

Descending the mountain at night is dangerous!

The mountain path from Tateishi Park to the station has almost no streetlights. After watching the sunset, it will quickly become completely dark.

  • Be sure to bring a flashlight or ensure your phone has enough battery for illumination.

  • It is recommended to descend with companions and avoid unofficial paths.

  • If you are alone, please consider taking a taxi down the mountain.

Tips

A grand fireworks festival is held at Lake Suwa every year on August 15th. If time permits, you can visit around this time to enjoy the spectacle.

Conclusion

Hida Furukawa is the texture of reality, while Tateishi Park is the color of a dream.

As I watched night fall at Tateishi Park, and the lights below the mountain gradually lit up, at that moment, the real Lake Suwa perfectly overlapped with the Lake Itomori in my memory.

Perhaps we spend our entire lives searching for something—perhaps a person, perhaps a place, or perhaps just to catch a glimpse of a view like this.
